NAPFA Advisor
Deidra shared comments in this magazine’s article which discussed the merits of pet insurance.
“ . . . it’s best to buy insurance while the pet is young, as the premiums increase quite a bit if they are purchased when the pet is older. So if purchased for a young pet, it might be a tradeoff as far as the premiums spent for the coverage vs. paying for an annual check-up and vaccinations out of pocket.
However, most people don’t think about buying pet coverage until their little one is older, at which time it’s usually not a bargain, or they find that coverage is not even available. Specifics vary among the plans, so be sure to encourage the client to compare carefully. As with health insurance for humans, it’s a good idea to prepare a cost benefit analysis for premiums/coverage under each plan under consideration vs. paying for typical expenses out of pocket.”
